Wine cooler displays E5 and compressor may not start or may short-cycle

Safety: Unplug the unit before accessing the rear service panel. Capacitors can hold a charge; discharge safely or have a professional handle testing.

E5 often indicates a problem in the compressor start circuit.

• Step 1 – Listen for behavior: Plug in the unit and listen (from a safe distance) for a clicking sound every few minutes without the compressor running steadily. Then unplug again.
• Step 2 – Access compressor area: Remove the lower rear panel to expose the compressor, start relay, and capacitor.
• Step 3 – Inspect start relay: Remove the relay from the compressor terminals. Shake it gently; if it rattles or smells burnt, it is likely defective.
• Step 4 – Check capacitor: Visually inspect for bulging or leaking. If you have a capacitance meter and know how to use it safely, test against the rated µF printed on the capacitor.
• Step 5 – Replace start components: If the relay or capacitor is suspect, replace them with KitchenAid-compatible parts. Ensure tight, correct connections on the compressor terminals.
• Step 6 – Evaluate compressor: If new start components do not resolve E5 and the compressor still fails to run or overheats quickly, the compressor itself or the control board relay may be faulty. This requires a sealed-system technician.
