Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay, Open thermal overload on compressor, Faulty main control board compressor relay, Loose wiring at compressor terminals
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit and wait several minutes before touching the compressor area. Components may be hot.
- Step 1 – Listen for operation: Plug in briefly and listen for compressor hum or clicking. If you hear a click every few minutes but no steady hum, suspect the start relay.
- Step 2 – Access rear compartment: Remove the lower rear panel to expose the compressor and start components.
- Step 3 – Inspect and test relay: Remove the start relay from the compressor. If it rattles when shaken or shows burn marks, replace it with a KitchenAid-compatible relay.
- Step 4 – Check wiring: Ensure all wires to the compressor, relay, and control board are firmly connected and not burnt.
- Step 5 – Control board: If the compressor never receives power (verified by a qualified person) despite a good relay, the main control board may be defective and should be replaced by a technician.
