Possible Causes

Failed evaporator thermistor, Thermistor dislodged from evaporator coil, Wiring harness damage in rear compartment, Faulty main control board sensor circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety warning: Disconnect power before removing rear panels or touching any electrical components. Sharp metal edges are present; wear cut-resistant gloves.

Diagnostic steps:

  • 1. Confirm error: Note if E2 appears immediately at power-on or after running. Persistent E2 indicates a sensor circuit issue.
  • 2. Access evaporator area: Remove the rear exterior panel or interior rear panel (depending on model) to access the evaporator coil and attached sensor.
  • 3. Inspect sensor placement: The evaporator thermistor is usually clipped to the evaporator tubing. Ensure it is firmly attached and not hanging loose or encased in heavy ice.
  • 4. Check for ice buildup: If the evaporator is a solid block of ice, carefully defrost with the unit unplugged (do not use sharp tools). Excessive ice can cause false readings.
  • 5. Test thermistor: Disconnect the thermistor from its connector and measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to expected NTC values at the measured temperature. Replace if open, shorted, or far out of spec.
  • 6. Inspect wiring to PCB: Trace the harness from the evaporator area to the main control board. Look for chafed insulation, rodent damage, or loose connectors. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
  • 7. Replace sensor or board: If the thermistor and wiring are good but E2 persists, the main control board sensor input may be defective. Replace the evaporator thermistor first (lower cost), then the main PCB if needed.

Professional help: If evaporator access requires refrigerant handling or sealed system work, stop and call a licensed technician.
