Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay or PTC, Open overload protector, Low supply voltage, Locked or failing compressor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit before touching the compressor or start components. The compressor shell can be very hot.

Diagnostic steps:

  • 1. Listen for compressor behavior: Plug in briefly and listen: a repeated click every few seconds with no sustained running suggests start circuit issues.
  • 2. Access compressor terminals: Remove the rear lower panel. Locate the black plastic start device and overload on the side of the compressor.
  • 3. Inspect start components: Remove the start relay/PTC and overload. Check for burn marks, rattling pieces inside the relay, or melted plastic.
  • 4. Test continuity: With a multimeter, test the overload protector for continuity. An open overload indicates it has tripped or failed. Test the PTC relay per LG specs if available.
  • 5. Check compressor windings (advanced): Measure resistance between the three compressor pins (C, R, S). Values should be finite and consistent with a healthy compressor. A short to ground or open winding indicates a bad compressor.
  • 6. Replace start components: If the compressor tests good but the relay or overload is faulty, replace them with the correct LG start device kit.
  • 7. Evaluate compressor: If new start components do not allow the compressor to run, the compressor may be locked or internally damaged, requiring sealed system service.

Important: Sealed system and compressor replacement must be performed by an EPA-certified technician with proper tools.
