How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the wine cooler before opening any panels. Evaporator fins are sharp—wear cut-resistant gloves.

Steps:

  • Defrost first: If there is heavy frost inside, unplug the unit and leave the door open for several hours until all ice melts. Place towels to catch water.
  • Access the evaporator area: Remove the interior rear panel inside the cabinet (usually behind the shelves). This exposes the evaporator coil and the evaporator thermistor clipped to the tubing or mounted nearby.
  • Inspect the sensor: Look for a small probe or plastic-encased sensor attached to the evaporator coil. Check for broken insulation, cracked housing, or wires pulled loose.
  • Check wiring harness: Follow the sensor wires back through the cabinet to the control board. Look for chafing where the wires pass through metal or foam, and ensure the connector is fully seated on the board.
  • Test the sensor: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the sensor from the board and measure resistance. Compare to the cabinet thermistor reading at similar temperature; they should be in a similar range. A reading of 0 ohms or infinite resistance indicates a failed sensor.
  • Replace the evaporator thermistor: If readings are out of range, install a new evaporator temperature sensor designed for your Magic Chef model. Clip it securely to the evaporator coil in the same location as the original.
  • Control board check: If the sensor tests good but E2 persists, the control board's sensor input may be defective. Inspect for burnt spots or swollen components and replace the main control board if necessary.

Note: Do not bend or puncture the evaporator tubing; this will release refrigerant and require professional sealed-system repair.
