Possible Causes

Overheated compressor due to poor ventilation, Faulty compressor start relay or PTC, Weak compressor, Defective main control board compressor driver

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the cooler before accessing the rear compartment. The compressor and condenser can be hot.

Steps:

  • Check ventilation: Ensure there is adequate clearance around the wine cooler (typically at least 2–3 inches at sides and back). Clean any dust from the rear grille and condenser coil with a soft brush or vacuum.
  • Listen for compressor behavior: Plug in briefly and listen: a click followed by a hum and then another click may indicate a bad start relay or overloaded compressor.
  • Inspect start relay and overload: With power disconnected, remove the rear lower panel. Locate the small plastic start device attached to the compressor terminals. Remove it and inspect for burnt smell, rattling pieces, or discoloration.
  • Test or replace start device: Many Magic Chef units use a PTC start relay that is inexpensive to replace. If it rattles when shaken or shows burn marks, replace it with the correct part for your model.
  • Check condenser fan (if equipped): Ensure the condenser fan motor spins freely and runs when the compressor is on. A failed fan can cause compressor overheating and E5 errors.
  • Control board: If the compressor never receives power (verify only if you are trained and using proper tools), the main control board may be defective and require replacement.

Warning: If the compressor is extremely hot to the touch or trips breakers, stop troubleshooting and contact a professional; the sealed system may be failing.
