Possible Causes

Failed evaporator thermistor, Thermistor dislodged from evaporator coil, Damaged thermistor harness, Faulty main control board sensor circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety warning: Disconnect power before removing any panels. Sharp metal edges around the evaporator can cause injury; wear cut-resistant gloves.

  • 1. Confirm the error: Power cycle the unit for 5 minutes. If E2 returns, proceed with diagnosis.
  • 2. Access evaporator area: Remove interior shelves and the rear inner liner panel to expose the evaporator coil. The evaporator thermistor is typically clipped directly to the coil or nearby tubing.
  • 3. Inspect sensor placement: Ensure the thermistor is firmly clipped to the evaporator and not hanging loose. A loose sensor can cause incorrect readings and trigger E2. Reclip if necessary.
  • 4. Check wiring: Follow the thermistor wires to the harness connector. Look for corrosion, broken wires, or loose pins. Reseat the connector and clean any light oxidation with electrical contact cleaner.
  • 5. Test the thermistor: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance. Compare to expected NTC values (e.g., ~10kΩ at 77°F/25°C). Replace the evaporator thermistor if reading is open, shorted, or far out of range.
  • 6. Evaluate control board: If the thermistor and wiring are good, the main control board may not be reading the sensor correctly. Inspect the board behind the rear service panel. If there are signs of damage or if sensor input tests bad, replace the control board.
  • 7. Reassemble and test: Reinstall all panels and shelves, restore power, and monitor operation for several hours to confirm the E2 code does not return.
