Possible Causes

Failed evaporator fan motor, Fan blade obstructed by ice or debris, Loose fan wiring harness, Faulty fan driver circuit on main control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety warning: Disconnect power before working near the fan. Fan blades can start unexpectedly if power is applied.

  • 1. Listen for fan operation: With the door closed and unit powered (before unplugging), listen for the evaporator fan running. If silent while the compressor is on, suspect a fan issue.
  • 2. Access the fan: Unplug the unit. Remove interior shelves and the rear inner panel to expose the evaporator fan assembly.
  • 3. Inspect for obstructions: Check for ice buildup around the fan, loose insulation, or wiring contacting the blades. Clear any obstructions. If there is heavy ice, the defrost system may also need attention.
  • 4. Test fan motor: Spin the fan blade by hand; it should move freely. Disconnect the fan connector and measure motor resistance. An open circuit indicates a failed motor. Replace the evaporator fan motor if defective.
  • 5. Check wiring to control board: Verify continuity from the fan connector to the main control board. Repair any damaged wires or loose connections.
  • 6. Control board check: If the fan motor and wiring are good, the fan driver on the control board may be faulty. Replace the main control board if it is not supplying voltage to the fan when commanded.
  • 7. Reassemble and test: Reinstall the panel and shelves, restore power, and confirm that the fan runs when the compressor is on and that the E6 code clears.
