Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay, Open or weak start capacitor, Overheating compressor overload protector, Faulty compressor windings

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit before accessing the compressor area. The compressor and nearby tubing can be very hot; allow to cool before touching.

  • 1. Listen for compressor behavior: When powered, you may hear a click followed by a brief hum and then another click. This often indicates a start relay or overload issue.
  • 2. Access compressor components: Remove the rear lower service panel to expose the compressor, start relay, overload, and capacitor (if equipped).
  • 3. Inspect start relay and overload: Remove the relay/overload assembly from the compressor terminals. Shake the relay gently; if it rattles or smells burnt, replace it. Check the overload for signs of heat damage.
  • 4. Test start capacitor: If your Maytag wine cooler uses a start capacitor, discharge it safely (short terminals with a resistor), then test with a capacitance meter. Replace if out of spec or open.
  • 5. Check compressor windings: With all components removed from the compressor terminals, measure resistance between the three pins. You should see three finite readings; none should be open or shorted to ground. If windings are open or shorted, the compressor is failed and requires professional replacement.
  • 6. Reassemble with new parts: Install a new OEM start relay/overload and capacitor if needed. Ensure all connections are tight.
  • 7. Test operation: Restore power and verify that the compressor starts smoothly and E7 clears. If the compressor still fails to start, contact a licensed refrigeration technician.
