Possible Causes
Failed defrost thermistor on evaporator, Thermistor knocked loose from evaporator coil, Broken or shorted thermistor wiring, Main PCB defrost sensor circuit failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing the evaporator or control board. Beware of sharp fins on the evaporator coil.
- 1. Inspect for heavy frost: Check the interior back wall for thick ice buildup. If present, unplug the unit and fully defrost for 12–24 hours with towels to catch water.
- 2. Access evaporator and defrost sensor: Remove shelves and the inner rear panel. Locate the defrost thermistor clipped to the evaporator tubing or bracket.
- 3. Check sensor placement: Ensure the sensor is firmly attached to the coil in the correct position. A loose sensor can misread temperature and trigger E4.
- 4. Test thermistor: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the defrost thermistor and measure resistance. Compare to the manufacturer’s spec at the measured temperature. Replace if open, shorted, or out of range.
- 5. Inspect wiring harness: Look for brittle or cracked insulation, especially where wires exit the foam cabinet. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
- 6. Evaluate main PCB: If the thermistor and wiring are good, the main control board may not be reading the sensor correctly and may require replacement.
Warning: Do not bend or kink the evaporator tubing; this can cause a refrigerant leak and permanent damage.
