Possible Causes
Blocked ventilation around cabinet, Dirty condenser coils, Failed condenser fan motor, Refrigerant leak or low charge, Faulty temperature sensor readings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before cleaning coils or accessing the rear compartment. Do not damage refrigerant lines.
Steps to address E9:
- Check installation: Ensure there is adequate clearance around the wine cooler per SMEG specifications (typically several centimeters at sides, top, and rear). Remove any obstructions blocking airflow.
- Clean condenser coils: Remove the rear lower panel to access the condenser. Use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust and lint from the coils and surrounding area.
- Verify condenser fan operation: When the compressor runs, the condenser fan should also run. If it does not, inspect the fan for obstructions and test/replace the condenser fan motor as needed.
- Check door seal: Inspect the door gasket for gaps, tears, or warping that could allow warm air in. Replace the gasket if it does not seal evenly all around.
- Monitor temperature: After cleaning and ensuring proper airflow, allow 12–24 hours for the unit to stabilize. If E9 persists and the interior remains warm despite the compressor running, a sealed system issue (refrigerant leak or restriction) is likely.
- Call a professional for sealed system issues: Refrigerant-related problems require a licensed refrigeration technician with proper tools and SMEG-compatible refrigerant.
Note: Do not attempt to top up refrigerant yourself; this is both unsafe and illegal in many regions.
