Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before touching the compressor or electrical components. The compressor shell can be very hot.
Steps:
- Check ventilation: Ensure the Transtherm cabinet has the required clearance at the rear and sides. Remove any objects blocking the ventilation grilles.
- Clean condenser: Access the rear of the unit and gently vacuum or brush dust from the condenser coil and fan. A clogged condenser causes overheating.
- Inspect condenser fan: Confirm the condenser fan (if fitted) spins freely and runs when the compressor is commanded on. Replace the condenser fan motor if seized or not powered.
- Check compressor start device: With power disconnected, remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Inspect the start relay and overload protector for burn marks or rattling (a sign of failure).
- Test and replace: If the start relay or overload is suspect, replace them with the correct Transtherm compressor start relay and overload protector kit.
- Allow cooling time: Let the compressor cool for 30–60 minutes before restarting. Reassemble covers, restore power, and observe operation.
Important: If E5 returns immediately and the compressor hums then clicks off, the compressor itself may be mechanically locked or internally damaged. This requires a sealed-system technician.
