Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay or PTC, Open overload protector, Locked or seized compressor, Faulty main control board compressor relay

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power before removing the rear service panel. The compressor area contains high-voltage components. Do not attempt sealed system repairs (refrigerant) unless you are EPA-certified.

Diagnostic steps:

  • 1. Listen for compressor behavior: With the unit powered (initial test), note if the compressor clicks on and off rapidly or hums then clicks off. Then unplug before proceeding.
  • 2. Access compressor compartment: Remove the lower rear panel to expose the compressor, start device, and main control board.
  • 3. Inspect start relay and overload: The start device is mounted on the compressor terminals. Look for burn marks, melted plastic, or a burnt odor. Gently remove the start device from the compressor.
  • 4. Test start relay/overload: Shake the relay; if it rattles or pieces fall out, it is likely bad. Use a multimeter to check continuity of the overload protector. Replace the start device assembly if defective.
  • 5. Check compressor windings (advanced): With the start device removed and power disconnected, measure resistance between compressor terminals (C-R, C-S, R-S). Values should be finite and not shorted to ground. If windings are open or shorted, the compressor is likely failed.
  • 6. Inspect control board relay: If the start device is good and compressor windings test normal, the main control board may not be sending proper power to the compressor. Look for burnt spots on the board; replacement is typically required.

Important: If the compressor itself is locked or electrically failed, replacement requires specialized tools, refrigerant handling, and should be done only by a Viking-authorized refrigeration technician.
