Possible Causes
Door not fully closed, Misaligned door or hinges, Failed magnetic reed switch or mechanical door switch, Broken door switch wiring
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Most checks can be done with power on, but unplug the unit before removing panels or testing wiring.
Steps:
- Confirm door closure: Check for racks or bottles preventing full closure. Ensure the door gasket contacts the cabinet evenly.
- Inspect hinges: Verify that the door is level and not sagging. Tighten hinge screws if loose.
- Test door switch: Locate the door switch (often at the top frame or side, sometimes a magnetic reed switch hidden in the frame). Open and close the door while observing the interior light and display. If the light stays on or the alarm persists, the switch may be faulty.
- Check wiring: If accessible, inspect the switch wiring for breaks or loose connectors.
- Replace door switch: Remove the old switch from the frame, disconnect wiring, and install a new Whirlpool-compatible door switch or reed sensor. Ensure proper alignment with the door magnet if used.
- Reset alarm: After repair, close the door firmly and press any alarm reset button if provided.
