Wine cooler displays E2 and may run continuously or not cool correctly.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety Warning: Disconnect power before removing rear or interior panels. Sharp metal edges can cause injury; wear cut-resistant gloves.
Diagnostic steps:
- Confirm error: Clear the code by unplugging the unit for 5 minutes. If E2 reappears shortly after restart, proceed.
- Access the evaporator area: Remove interior shelves and the rear evaporator cover inside the cabinet. The evaporator thermistor is usually clipped to the evaporator tubing or mounted near the coil.
- Inspect sensor placement: Ensure the thermistor is firmly attached to the evaporator coil or bracket. A loose sensor can cause incorrect readings and trigger E2.
- Check wiring: Follow the thermistor leads back toward the cabinet wall. Look for chafed insulation, corrosion at connectors, or signs of moisture damage.
- Test thermistor resistance: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance. Compare to expected values for the approximate coil temperature (often lower than room temperature). A reading of OL (open) or near 0 ohms indicates a bad sensor.
- Replace evaporator thermistor: If readings are out of range, install a new Whirlpool-compatible evaporator thermistor. Clip it securely to the coil in the same location as the original to ensure accurate sensing.
- Control board evaluation: If the new thermistor and wiring are good but E2 persists, the main control board may not be interpreting the sensor signal correctly. Inspect and replace the board if necessary.
Note: Avoid bending or puncturing the evaporator tubing; this can cause refrigerant leaks and require sealed system service.
