Possible Causes
Loose or damaged ribbon cable between UI and main board, Failed user interface (display) board, Oxidized connectors at control interface, Main control board communication driver failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power before removing the control panel. Handle display boards carefully to avoid cracking or static damage.
Steps:
- Remove control panel: Take out screws securing the top/front panel and gently pull it forward.
- Inspect ribbon cable: Check the flat cable or harness connecting the display to the main control. Look for kinks, cuts, or burn marks.
- Reseat connectors: Unplug the ribbon cable from both ends and reconnect firmly. Ensure it is fully inserted and locked.
- Check for moisture: Look for signs of condensation or liquid intrusion around the display. Dry the area thoroughly if needed.
- Test operation: Reassemble enough to safely power the unit and see if E6 clears. If the error persists, proceed.
- Replace UI board: If wiring is intact, the user interface board is often the failed component. Install a Whirlpool-compatible replacement, transferring any overlay or trim as required.
- Consider main board: If a new UI does not resolve the issue, the main control board may have a communication fault and should be replaced.
Note: Do not pinch the ribbon cable when reinstalling the panel; this can cause intermittent errors.
