Wine cooler displays E7 and may not cool or may shut down unexpectedly.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety Warning: Unplug the unit before accessing the compressor compartment. The compressor and associated wiring carry line voltage.
Steps:
- Check ventilation: Ensure there is adequate clearance around the wine cooler per Whirlpool installation specs. Blocked vents can cause overheating and overload trips.
- Access rear compartment: Remove the rear lower access panel to expose the compressor, start device, and control board.
- Inspect start relay/PTC: Remove the start device from the compressor terminals. Shake it gently; if it rattles or shows burn marks, it may be defective.
- Test compressor windings: With power disconnected, measure resistance between the three compressor pins. You should see three finite resistance values; any open circuit or direct short to ground indicates a bad compressor.
- Replace start device: If the compressor windings test good, install a new Whirlpool-compatible start relay/PTC and overload protector.
- Check wiring and board: Inspect the compressor harness and the control board relay for signs of overheating or damage.
- Monitor operation: Restore power and observe. If E7 returns and the compressor hums then clicks off, the compressor may be mechanically locked and require sealed system service or replacement.
Important: Sealed system and compressor replacement should be performed only by an EPA-certified refrigeration technician.
