Possible Causes
Defective compressor start relay/PTC, Open overload protector, Failed compressor windings, Faulty compressor relay on main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety Warning: Unplug the unit before accessing the compressor and electrical components.
Steps:
- Listen for sounds: A repeated clicking from the compressor area every few minutes suggests a start device problem.
- Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor and start device.
- Inspect start device: Remove the start relay/overload from the compressor. Check for burn marks or a burnt smell.
- Test compressor windings: With power off, measure resistance between compressor terminals. If any terminal is open or shorted to ground, the compressor is bad.
- Replace start device: If the compressor tests good, install a new Whirlpool-compatible start relay and overload protector.
- Check control board relay: If the compressor never receives voltage, the main control board relay may be faulty and require replacement.
Note: Compressor replacement is a sealed system repair and should be done by a certified technician.
