Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay, Open overload protector, Locked rotor in compressor, Low line voltage
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before touching the compressor or electrical components. The compressor shell can be very hot.
Steps:
- Verify voltage: Ensure the outlet provides correct voltage (typically 115–120V AC). Low voltage can prevent starting.
- Inspect relay/overload: Remove the cover on the side of the compressor to access the start relay and overload. Look for burn marks or melted plastic.
- Test and replace: If the relay rattles when shaken or shows signs of overheating, replace the relay/overload assembly with a Whynter-compatible kit.
- Monitor operation: After replacement, restore power and observe. If the compressor still fails to start and continues clicking, the compressor may be mechanically locked.
Note: A locked compressor requires replacement by a licensed refrigeration technician; it is not a DIY repair.
