Possible Causes

Normal automatic defrost cycle, Extended defrost due to heavy frost, Faulty defrost sensor causing prolonged defrost

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Note: On many Whynter wine coolers, 'dF' simply indicates that the unit is in a defrost cycle and is not an error.

What to do:

  • Observe duration: A normal defrost cycle may last 15–30 minutes. If 'dF' clears and cooling resumes, no action is needed.
  • Check for excessive frost: If 'dF' remains for hours and the cabinet warms, unplug the unit, remove interior panels, and inspect the evaporator for heavy ice buildup.
  • Manual defrost: Allow the unit to fully defrost with the door open. Do not use sharp tools to chip ice; use towels to catch meltwater.
  • Inspect defrost sensor: If the unit frequently stays in defrost too long, test and replace the defrost thermistor as needed.

Call a technician if the unit remains stuck in defrost or never enters defrost, as the control board or defrost heater circuit may be faulty.
