Possible Causes

Overheated compressor, Faulty compressor overload protector, Blocked condenser airflow, Failed condenser fan motor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit before accessing the rear service area. The compressor and condenser can be hot.

Steps to address E5:

  • Check ventilation: Ensure the wine cooler has proper clearance per Whynter specs (typically several inches at rear and sides). Remove any obstructions blocking the rear grille.
  • Clean the condenser coils: Remove the rear lower panel to access the condenser. Use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust and lint from the coils and fan blades.
  • Verify condenser fan operation: With the panel off, briefly plug in the unit and observe whether the condenser fan starts when the compressor runs. If the fan does not spin or is noisy, the fan motor may be failing.
  • Inspect compressor overload device: The overload/relay assembly is attached to the compressor terminals. Look for signs of burning or melting. A clicking sound every few minutes without the compressor starting can indicate a bad overload or relay.
  • Replace faulty components: If the condenser fan is not running, replace it with a Whynter-compatible condenser fan motor. If the overload device is suspect, replace the compressor start relay/overload assembly.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall the rear panel, restore power, and monitor operation. The E5 code should clear once the compressor operates normally and temperatures stabilize.

Important: If the compressor is extremely hot to the touch or fails to start even with a new relay/overload, the compressor itself may be failing and requires a licensed refrigeration technician.
