Goodman mini-split or inverter condenser shows E3 and outdoor fan or compressor will not run
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the outdoor disconnect and breaker. Wait several minutes for capacitors to discharge before touching components.
Steps to check:
- 1. Inspect fan blade: Remove the top grille of the Goodman condenser. Check for debris (sticks, leaves, plastic) blocking the fan. Spin the blade by hand; it should rotate freely without grinding.
- 2. Check wiring to fan motor: Locate the fan motor harness where it plugs into the outdoor PCB. Ensure the connector is fully seated and wires are not damaged or pinched.
- 3. Look for burnt components: Inspect the outdoor PCB for burnt spots, swollen components, or discoloration around the fan drive section.
- 4. Test fan motor (if equipped with capacitor): On non-inverter models, check the fan capacitor (often shared with compressor). If the top is bulged or leaking oil, replace the capacitor with the same µF and voltage rating.
- 5. Attempt restart: Reassemble, restore power, and call for cooling. If the fan still does not start and E3 returns, the motor or board is likely defective.
When to call a professional: Replacement of a DC inverter fan motor or outdoor PCB requires proper part matching and electrical safety; have an HVAC technician perform this repair.
