Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the disconnect before cleaning or working near the fan. Do not open the sealed refrigerant system yourself.
Steps to check:
- 1. Clean outdoor coil: Remove leaves and debris from the Goodman condenser. From the inside out, gently rinse the coil fins with a garden hose (low pressure) to remove dirt. Avoid bending fins.
- 2. Verify fan operation: Restore power and call for cooling. Confirm the outdoor fan starts promptly and runs at normal speed. If it does not, suspect a fan motor or capacitor issue.
- 3. Check airflow clearance: Ensure at least 2–3 feet of clearance around the unit and 5 feet above. Remove obstructions like shrubs or lattice.
- 4. Indoor airflow: Dirty indoor filters or evaporator coil can also cause high discharge temperature. Replace filters and ensure supply/return vents are open.
When to call a professional: If E4 persists after cleaning and airflow checks, a technician must check refrigerant charge, discharge temperature, and compressor condition with proper gauges and tools.
