Possible Causes

Low supply voltage or unstable power, Shorted or seized compressor, Faulty compressor start capacitor (on non-inverter models), Faulty power module on main PCB

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit. High voltage and stored charge in capacitors can be dangerous; if you are not experienced with electrical work, contact a technician.

  • Step 1 – Check power supply: Ensure the unit is on a dedicated circuit with the correct voltage and amperage. Avoid using extension cords or power strips.
  • Step 2 – Inspect power cord and plug: Look for burn marks, melting, or loose connections at the outlet. Replace damaged cords or use a different outlet.
  • Step 3 – Listen to compressor: When turning on cooling, listen for a humming or clicking from the compressor area. A loud hum followed by a click may indicate a start capacitor or compressor issue.
  • Step 4 – Check start capacitor (if equipped): On some Sencor portable units, a start/run capacitor is mounted near the compressor. With power disconnected and capacitor discharged, inspect for bulging or leakage. Replace with the same µF rating if defective.
  • Step 5 – Inspect main PCB: Look for burnt components or darkened areas on the power module section of the PCB. If present, the board should be replaced.
  • Step 6 – Professional compressor test: If E5 persists and the compressor does not run, a technician should test compressor windings and current draw. A shorted or locked compressor requires professional replacement.
