Possible Causes

Low outdoor temperature causing frequent defrost, Frost buildup on outdoor coil, Faulty outdoor coil sensor, Control logic holding fan off until coil warms

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Note: H1 on many Sencor heat pump models is an informational code indicating defrost or preheat, not a fault.

  • Step 1 – Observe operation: During H1, the outdoor unit may stop the fan and reverse cycle to melt ice. This can last several minutes.
  • Step 2 – Check outdoor coil: Inspect for heavy ice buildup. If coil is completely blocked by ice, ensure outdoor airflow is not obstructed by snow, leaves, or covers.
  • Step 3 – Clean surroundings: Clear snow and debris around the outdoor unit to improve airflow.
  • Step 4 – Sensor check: If H1 appears excessively often and heating is poor, check the outdoor coil sensor as in F5; a misreading sensor can trigger unnecessary defrost cycles.
  • Step 5 – Professional evaluation: If defrost cycles are abnormally frequent, a technician should check refrigerant charge and defrost control parameters.
