Possible Causes

Blocked condenser airflow, Dirty condenser coil, Faulty compressor overload protector, Low or high line voltage outside unit spec

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit. Do not attempt sealed-system refrigerant work unless you are a licensed technician.

  • Improve airflow: Check that the rear of the Soleus Air unit has at least the recommended clearance from walls or obstructions. Remove any covers and clean the condenser coil with a soft brush or vacuum to remove dust and lint.
  • Clean filters: Remove and wash the air filters with mild soap and water. Let them dry completely before reinstalling.
  • Check ambient temperature: Ensure the unit is not operating in extremely high ambient temperatures beyond its rating, which can trigger high-pressure protection.
  • Verify power supply: Use a plug-in voltage tester or multimeter to confirm that the outlet voltage matches the rating on the Soleus Air nameplate (typically 115V or 230V). Avoid using undersized extension cords or power strips.
  • Inspect compressor area: With the cabinet removed (and power disconnected), locate the compressor and its overload protector. Look for signs of overheating or burnt smell. Do not touch terminals directly.
  • Allow cool-down: If the compressor is very hot, allow the unit to cool for 30–60 minutes, then try again. If E5 recurs quickly, the overload or compressor may be failing.
  • When to call a technician: If cleaning and power checks do not resolve E5, the issue may be a failing compressor, faulty overload, or refrigerant system problem. These require professional service.
