Possible Causes
Restricted airflow due to dirty filter, Evaporator coil heavily clogged with dust, Low refrigerant charge causing coil to freeze
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off and unplug the unit before cleaning coils or filters.
- Thaw the unit: If you see ice on the evaporator coil, turn the unit off and let it sit with the fan running (if possible) or powered off until all ice melts. Place towels under the unit to catch water.
- Clean the air filter: Remove the filter and wash it with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and let it dry completely before reinstalling.
- Clean the evaporator coil: Gently vacuum the coil fins with a soft brush attachment. For heavy buildup, use a non-rinse foaming coil cleaner rated for aluminum fins. Avoid bending the fins.
- Check room conditions: Ensure doors and windows are closed and the unit is not oversized for the space, which can cause short cycling and coil freezing.
- Verify fan speed: Run the unit on a higher fan speed to improve airflow across the coil.
- Persistent E8: If E8 recurs even with clean filters and good airflow, the system may have a refrigerant or sensor issue. This requires a licensed HVAC technician to diagnose and repair.
