Possible Causes

Blocked airflow in wand or hose, Blocked brush bar housing, Clogged pre-motor filter, Failed thermal cut-out thermostat

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn the machine off and unplug it from the mains before any inspection. Allow at least 30 minutes for the unit to cool if it feels warm.

  • Check for blockages: Remove the wand, hose, and floorhead. Look through each section for clogs (hair, carpet fibres, debris). Use a straight, non‑sharp object to gently push out blockages. Do not use metal rods that could puncture the hose.
  • Inspect the brush bar housing: Flip the cleaner head over, remove the base plate (usually quarter‑turn fasteners or Torx screws on Dyson heads). Clear any hair or threads wrapped around the brush bar and remove any compacted debris in the air path.
  • Clean the pre‑motor filter: Remove the pre‑motor filter (typically located near the cyclone or side housing). Rinse under cold water until the water runs clear. Squeeze out excess water and allow to dry completely for at least 24 hours before refitting. Never refit a damp filter.
  • Reset / inspect thermal cut-out: Many Dyson units use an auto‑resetting thermal fuse. After clearing blockages and cleaning filters, leave the machine unplugged for 1–2 hours to cool fully, then try again. If E1 returns immediately, the thermal cut-out or motor may be failing.
  • When to call a technician: If the machine still shows E1 with clear airflow and clean filters, the thermal cut-out thermostat or motor assembly may need replacement. This involves opening the main body and should be done by a qualified technician.
