Possible Causes
Hair or fibres wrapped around brush bar, Jammed brush bar end caps, Failed brush bar motor, Stripped drive belt or gear
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Switch off and unplug before working on the cleaner head.
- Remove the cleaner head: Detach the motorised head from the wand or main body according to the user manual.
- Open the base plate: Turn the head over and remove the base plate (usually via quarter‑turn fasteners or screws). Keep fasteners in a small container.
- Clear the brush bar: Cut away hair, threads, and fibres using scissors, taking care not to cut the bristles. Remove any debris from the ends of the brush bar and around the bearings.
- Check brush bar bearings: Pull the brush bar out if the design allows. Spin the end caps by hand; they should rotate smoothly. If they feel gritty or seized, the brush bar assembly should be replaced.
- Inspect drive components: Some Dyson carpet heads use a small belt or gear train. Check for broken or stripped gears and a loose or snapped belt.
- Reassemble and test: Refit the brush bar and base plate, reconnect the head, and test. If E3 returns and the brush bar does not move, the brush bar motor or internal wiring is likely faulty and the entire cleaner head may need replacement.
