Carpet cleaner will not start; display shows E1 immediately after pressing the power button.

Safety first: Unplug the Rowenta carpet cleaner from the wall outlet before any inspection. Never work on a live appliance.

• Check the wall outlet and plug fuse: Test the outlet with another appliance. If the outlet works, remove the Rowenta plug fuse (if applicable in your region) and test/replace it with the same rating.
• Inspect the power cord: Look along the entire length of the cord for cuts, kinks, burn marks, or crushed sections. If any damage is visible, the cord set must be replaced; do not tape or splice it.
• Test the power switch: Remove the handle or upper housing (per Rowenta service layout) to access the main power rocker switch. Using a multimeter on continuity, verify that the switch closes (0 Ω) when turned ON. Replace the switch if it remains open.
• Check the main control PCB: If power is present at the switch output but the unit still shows E1 and does not start, inspect the main control PCB for burnt components or cracked solder joints. Replacement of the PCB is usually required rather than repair.
• Reassemble and test: After replacing any faulty part, reassemble the housing carefully, ensuring all wiring connectors are fully seated and routed away from moving parts, then test the unit.
