Carpet cleaner will not power on, display shows E1 or power icon flashing

Safety first: Unplug the VAX Platinum carpet cleaner from the wall socket before any inspection. Never work on a live appliance.

• Check wall outlet and fuse: Plug a lamp or phone charger into the same socket to confirm power. If dead, reset the breaker or use another outlet. Remove the plug fuse (usually 13A in the UK), visually inspect, and replace with the same rating if blown.
• Inspect power cord: Run your fingers along the entire length of the cord looking for cuts, kinks, or crushed sections. If you see exposed copper or severe damage, stop using the machine and have the cord professionally replaced.
• Reset thermal cut-out: Some VAX Platinum models have an internal thermal cut-out that resets when the unit cools. Leave the machine unplugged for at least 45–60 minutes in a cool room, then try again. Ensure all air vents are clear of dust and lint.
• Check power switch: With the unit unplugged, operate the main power switch on and off several times to free any stuck contacts. If the switch feels loose, wobbly, or does not click, it may be faulty and require replacement.
• When to stop: If the fuse and outlet are good and the machine still shows E1 or remains dead, the internal wiring or PCB may be faulty. Do not open the main body unless you are competent with electrical repairs; contact a VAX service centre.
