Possible Causes

Snapped brush drive belt, Stretched or slipping brush drive belt, Jammed brushbar bearings, Faulty brush motor (on models with separate brush motor)

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the machine and remove the clean and dirty water tanks before working underneath.

  • Inspect brushbar: Turn the unit over and remove the brushbar access plate. Try to rotate the brushbar by hand. If it is stiff or seized, remove it completely and clean hair and debris from the bristles and end caps.
  • Check drive belt: With the access plate off, locate the drive belt between the motor pulley and brushbar. If the belt is broken, frayed, or very loose, it must be replaced. Use a genuine VAX Platinum brush drive belt for correct tension.
  • Replace belt: Slip the new belt over the motor spindle first, then stretch it over the brushbar pulley. Re-seat the brushbar in its bearings, ensuring it is fully engaged and spins freely. Refit the access plate securely.
  • Test operation: Reinstall tanks, plug in, and briefly power on while holding the machine upright. Confirm the brushbar rotates smoothly without unusual noise.
  • If belt and brushbar are OK: On models with a dedicated brush motor, a failed motor or internal gearbox can cause E3. This requires disassembly of the base and is best handled by a professional technician.
