Possible Causes

Carafe not seated correctly on warming plate, Magnetic sensor or microswitch under plate faulty, Broken magnet in carafe handle, Wiring to sensor damaged

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the coffee maker before inspecting the warming plate area.

This error indicates the machine believes no carafe or cup is present.

  • Reseat carafe: Place the carafe firmly in the center of the warming plate. Ensure it is the original Severin carafe designed for the model.
  • Check for dirt: Clean the warming plate and the bottom of the carafe with a damp cloth to remove coffee residue that may affect sensor operation.
  • Test with gentle pressure: With the machine plugged in, gently press down on the carafe while starting a brew (avoid touching hot surfaces). If it starts, the sensor or spring mechanism may be misaligned.
  • Inspect carafe magnet: Some models use a magnet in the handle. If the handle is damaged or replaced with a non-original carafe, the sensor will not trigger.
  • If E09 persists: The carafe presence microswitch or reed sensor under the plate may need replacement.
