Possible Causes
Blocked drain pump impeller, Clogged drain hose, Blocked sink trap connection, Failed drain pump motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dishwasher or switch off the breaker before accessing the pump or hoses.
Basic checks:
- Clean filters: Remove the lower basket and filter assembly. Clear any food debris or glass from the sump area.
- Check drain hose: Inspect the hose from the dishwasher to the sink trap or garbage disposer. Ensure it is not kinked or crushed. Detach it at the sink end (place a bowl underneath) and flush with hot water to remove blockages.
- Inspect sink connection: If recently installed to a garbage disposer, ensure the knockout plug was removed. Clean the spigot on the sink trap or disposer.
- Check pump impeller: With filters removed, look into the sump for the drain pump impeller. Carefully feel for obstructions (glass, bones, labels). Remove any debris with pliers.
Advanced:
- Access the base of the dishwasher, locate the drain pump, and check for loose wiring or signs of burning. If the pump hums but does not turn, or is silent and receives power, it likely needs replacement.
When to call a technician: If the pump motor is electrically open/shorted or the control board is not sending power to the pump, professional service is recommended.
