Possible Causes

Blocked drain pump impeller, Clogged sump filter, Kinked or blocked drain hose, Faulty drain pump motor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the dishwasher and close the water supply tap. Expect some residual water when opening filters and hoses.

  • Clean filters: Open the door, remove the lower basket, and take out the coarse and fine filters from the base. Rinse thoroughly under hot water and remove any food debris.
  • Check sump area: Shine a torch into the sump (beneath the filters). Remove any glass, bones, or foreign objects that could block the pump inlet.
  • Inspect drain hose: Check behind the dishwasher and under the sink for kinks, crushed sections, or blockages where the hose connects to the sink trap. Remove the hose from the trap and clear any buildup.
  • Check sink trap spigot: If the dishwasher was recently installed, ensure the blanking plug in the sink trap spigot has been removed.
  • Access drain pump: Remove the lower front or bottom panel to reach the drain pump. Detach the pump from the sump (usually a twist-lock or a few screws). Check the impeller for obstructions and ensure it spins freely.
  • Test pump: If you have a multimeter, check for continuity across the pump terminals. An open circuit indicates a failed pump that must be replaced.
  • Reassemble and test: Refit the pump, filters, and hose, then run a short cycle to confirm proper draining.
