Possible Causes
Failed booster heater element, Tripped booster high-limit thermostat, Insufficient supply voltage to booster, Faulty booster temperature control or contactor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker panel feeding the booster and allow it to cool. Booster tanks can be extremely hot.
- Check high-limit reset: Locate the manual reset high-limit thermostat on the booster. Press the reset button if tripped. If it trips repeatedly, investigate overheating causes.
- Test booster element: Remove access cover and measure resistance across the booster heater terminals. Replace the element if open or shorted.
- Verify supply voltage: Confirm that the booster is receiving the correct line voltage (often 208–240V or higher for commercial units). Low voltage can prevent proper heating.
- Inspect contactor / relay: Check that the booster contactor pulls in during a heat call and that its contacts are not burned. Replace if defective.
- Temperature control: For boosters with separate controls, verify the thermostat or electronic controller is set correctly and functioning per the service manual.
