Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dryer. A tripped thermal limiter indicates an overheating event; correct the cause before replacing parts.
- Clean venting thoroughly: Remove the exhaust hose and clean lint from the hose, wall duct, and exterior hood. Ensure the hood flap opens freely.
- Access thermal limiter: Remove the rear panel and locate the thermal limiter (often a small disc thermostat on the heater housing). Test for continuity; if open, it must be replaced (it is not resettable).
- Inspect heater housing: Check for lint buildup or foreign objects around the heater that could cause hot spots.
- Replace limiter and test: After replacing the limiter and cleaning the vent, run a test cycle while monitoring for normal heat cycling.
If the new limiter opens again, there is an unresolved overheating issue (such as a stuck heater relay or grounded element) that should be diagnosed by a professional.
