Possible Causes
Worn or broken drive belt, Faulty drum motor, Faulty motor capacitor (on condenser models), Motor wiring fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dryer and be aware that capacitors can hold a charge. Discharge capacitors safely if you are qualified.
- 1. Check drum movement: With the dryer off, open the door and try to rotate the drum by hand. It should turn smoothly with some resistance. If it is jammed, check for foreign objects between drum and cabinet.
- 2. Listen for motor hum: When starting a cycle (before unplugging), note whether you hear a humming sound. A hum without rotation often indicates a failed capacitor or jammed motor.
- 3. Inspect the belt: Remove the top panel and possibly the rear panel to view the belt. If the belt is broken or off the pulley, replace it with a Zanussi-compatible drive belt.
- 4. Check motor capacitor (if fitted): On many condenser dryers, a start/run capacitor is mounted near the motor. Inspect for bulging, leaks, or burn marks. Replace if defective, matching the µF rating.
- 5. Wiring inspection: Check the motor connector and wiring harness for signs of overheating or loose connections. Repair or replace as needed.
- 6. Advanced testing: Use a multimeter to check motor windings for continuity and insulation resistance. If windings are open or shorted, the motor must be replaced.
- 7. Professional service: If E50 persists after belt and capacitor checks, the motor or motor control circuit on the PCB may be faulty. This should be diagnosed by a professional.
