Possible Causes
Protective coating damaged by abrasive cleaning, Standing water left in cabinet, High salt or acidic marinades contacting bare metal, Poor drying after use
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure the smoker is unplugged and cool before cleaning or treating rust.
Steps:
- Remove loose rust: Use a non-metallic scrub pad or fine steel wool to remove surface rust from racks and interior surfaces.
- Clean and dry: Wipe with a damp cloth and then dry thoroughly.
- Season interior: Lightly coat bare metal areas with high-smoke-point cooking oil and run the smoker empty at medium temperature for 1–2 hours to reseason.
Repair: Replace heavily corroded cooking racks or water pans. Avoid harsh abrasives in the future.
