Possible Causes
Failed metal-oxide varistor (MOV) on input, Damaged surge protection module, Burned input filter components, Overvoltage event from grid
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: If you smell burning or see soot around the input area, do not re-energize the charger until it has been inspected.
- Step 1 – Visual inspection: Disconnect power and remove the charger cover. Inspect the input surge protection area (near where the line wires enter) for cracked, blackened, or exploded MOV discs or surge modules.
- Step 2 – Check fuses: Locate any internal input fuses or thermal fuses. Test continuity with a multimeter. Replace only with the exact type and rating specified by BougeRV.
- Step 3 – Assess board damage: If the PCB around the surge components is charred or traces are damaged, the entire BougeRV main control / power board will likely need replacement.
- Step 4 – Replace surge components: If damage is limited to a discrete MOV or surge module and the board is intact, replace the BougeRV surge protection module / MOV assembly with an identical part.
- Step 5 – Future protection: Consider installing an upstream whole-house surge protector to reduce the risk of repeat failures.
