Possible Causes
Shorted J1772 cable conductors, Water ingress causing tracking inside charger, Undersized breaker for configured current, Internal contactor or wiring short
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Repeated breaker tripping indicates a potentially dangerous fault. Turn the breaker off and leave it off until the issue is resolved.
- Inspect cable and handle: Look for cuts, melted spots, or burn marks along the cable and at the J1772 handle. Replace the cable assembly if any damage is found.
- Check for moisture: If the charger is outdoors, inspect for signs of water entry around gaskets and cable entry points. Do not use the charger until it is completely dry and any leaks are sealed.
- Verify current setting: In the Emporia app, ensure the maximum current does not exceed 80% of the breaker rating (e.g., 40A on a 50A breaker). Reduce the setting and test again.
- Internal inspection (qualified person): With power off, open the charger and look for burned components, charred wiring, or a damaged contactor.
- If any internal damage is found: Replace the affected components (typically the J1772 cable assembly, contactor, or entire control board). Do not attempt to bypass the breaker or protection devices.
