Possible Causes
Damaged J1772 charge handle, Open or shorted pilot wire in charge cable, Faulty control board pilot driver circuit, Corroded or bent pins in vehicle connector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the Emporia charger at the breaker before touching the cable or opening any covers. EVSE circuits are typically 240V and can be lethal.
- Inspect the J1772 handle: With power off, examine the charge handle for cracks, burn marks, or melted plastic around the small pilot pin. Check that all pins are straight and clean.
- Clean connector pins: Use a dry, non-metallic brush or compressed air to remove debris. Do not use liquids or lubricants on the pins.
- Check cable strain: Look for kinks, crushed sections, or spots where the cable jacket is cut or abraded, especially near the handle and where it enters the charger housing.
- Power cycle the charger: Turn the breaker off for 2 minutes, then back on. Reboot the Emporia app and retry plugging into the vehicle.
- Test with another EV (if available): If another vehicle charges normally, the issue may be with the original vehicle’s inlet. If no vehicles will charge, the fault is likely in the cable or control board.
- Do not open the sealed electronics compartment: Internal pilot driver repairs require a qualified technician. If the cable and handle appear damaged, replacement of the entire charge cable assembly is recommended.
