Possible Causes

Faulty proximity switch in J1772 handle, Broken proximity wire in cable, Stuck or damaged latch mechanism on handle, Control board proximity input failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Switch off the Emporia charger at the breaker before inspecting the handle.

  • Check the latch: With the charger de-energized, operate the latch on the J1772 handle repeatedly. It should move smoothly and spring back. If it feels loose, jammed, or does not return, the internal switch may be damaged.
  • Inspect for physical damage: Look for cracks around the latch area, missing plastic, or signs of impact.
  • Test handle engagement: Plug the handle into the vehicle inlet firmly until you hear/feel a click. If the handle does not fully seat, the proximity circuit may not close.
  • Try another vehicle or inlet (if possible): This helps rule out a misaligned or damaged vehicle inlet latch.
  • Power cycle and retest: Restore power at the breaker, wait for the charger to boot, then attempt charging again.
  • If E02 persists: The proximity switch or wiring inside the cable is likely faulty. The safe remedy is to replace the complete J1772 cable and handle assembly. Internal board-level proximity input faults require a professional technician or Emporia support.
