Possible Causes
Moisture inside J1772 connector, Damaged insulation in charge cable, Water ingress into wall unit, Faulty internal GFCI sensor on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Immediately stop using the charger. Turn off the breaker. Do not attempt to charge until the cause is identified. Ground faults can be hazardous.
- Inspect for moisture: Check the J1772 handle and vehicle inlet for water, condensation, or corrosion. If wet, allow everything to dry completely for at least 24 hours in a dry, ventilated area.
- Check cable condition: Look for cuts, abrasions, or crushed sections along the entire length of the cable. Any exposed conductor or soft spots indicate internal damage.
- Inspect the wall unit exterior: Look for signs of water entry (stains, rust at screws, warped plastic). Ensure the weatherproof cover (if outdoor) is intact and properly sealed.
- Reset and test: After drying and visual inspection, turn the breaker back on. If the charger boots normally, plug into the vehicle and monitor. If E03 reappears immediately, stop and turn power off again.
- Do not open the sealed electronics compartment: Internal GFCI sensors and high-voltage components must be serviced only by qualified personnel. If E03 persists, contact Emporia or a licensed electrician; the control board or cable assembly may need replacement.
