Possible Causes

Loose terminal screws on line or load lugs, Undersized branch circuit conductors, Damaged or undersized J1772 connector contacts, High ambient temperature with inadequate ventilation

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If the enclosure or cable is too hot to touch comfortably, stop charging immediately and turn OFF the breaker.

Steps:

  • 1. Check installation: Verify the breaker and wire size match the EVSE rating per Leviton’s manual.
  • 2. Inspect terminals (electrician): With power OFF, remove the cover and check torque on all line, load, and ground terminals using a torque screwdriver to the manufacturer’s specs.
  • 3. Examine cable and connector: Look for discoloration, soft spots, or melted plastic on the cable or handle. Replace if any damage is found.
  • 4. Improve ventilation: Ensure the EVSE is not enclosed in a tight cabinet and that airflow is not blocked.
  • 5. Reduce current (if configurable): Temporarily lower the maximum current setting via DIP switches or app to reduce heating until permanent corrections are made.
