Possible Causes
Vehicle charge cable insulation breakdown, Contaminated or wet charge connector, Internal ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) trip, Fault in vehicle’s onboard charger causing leakage to ground
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the Leviton EVSE at its dedicated breaker before touching the cable or opening any covers. Do not use the charger if you suspect water intrusion or damaged insulation.
Step-by-step:
- 1. Power cycle the EVSE: Switch the branch circuit breaker OFF for 2–3 minutes, then back ON. Check if E01 clears. If it immediately returns, leave the unit OFF and continue below.
- 2. Inspect the charge cable: Run your hand (visually, not physically if damaged) along the entire Leviton J1772 cable. Look for cuts, abrasions, melted spots, or crushed sections. Inspect the J1772 handle for cracks, burn marks, or corrosion on the pins. If any damage is found, stop using the charger and plan to replace the cable assembly.
- 3. Check for moisture and contamination: Ensure the connector and holster are dry and free of dirt, salt, or debris. If damp, allow to dry completely indoors. Do not use heat guns; allow air-drying.
- 4. Try a different vehicle (if available): If E01 only appears with one specific EV, the vehicle’s onboard charger or inlet may be leaking to ground. Contact the vehicle manufacturer.
- 5. Test GFCI function: Many Leviton EVSE models have an internal GFCI test button or self-test routine. Follow the user manual to run the self-test. If the test fails or E01 persists with no visible cable damage, the internal GFCI module may be faulty.
- 6. When to call a technician: If E01 reappears after drying, cable inspection, and breaker reset, the internal ground fault circuitry or control board likely needs replacement. This requires opening the enclosure and should be done only by a qualified electrician or Leviton-authorized service center.
