Possible Causes

Broken pilot conductor in J1772 cable, Corroded or bent pilot pin in connector, Faulty pilot driver circuit on control board, Vehicle inlet pilot contact damage

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker. Do not attempt to bend pins with power applied.

Steps:

  • 1. Inspect the J1772 connector: Look closely at the small pilot pin (usually the smallest pin). Check for bending, corrosion, or contamination. Clean gently with a dry, lint-free cloth only.
  • 2. Check cable strain relief: Flex the cable gently near the EVSE housing and near the handle. If E04 appears or disappears when flexed, the pilot conductor may be broken internally; the cable assembly must be replaced.
  • 3. Test with another EV: If available, plug into a different vehicle. If the second vehicle charges normally, the first vehicle’s inlet pilot contact may be faulty.
  • 4. Visual inspection inside EVSE: With power OFF and cover removed by a qualified person, verify the pilot wire is securely landed on the control board terminal and not pinched or cut.
  • 5. Board-level fault: If the pilot wiring and connector are intact but E04 persists with multiple vehicles, the pilot driver/monitor circuit on the Leviton control PCB is likely defective and the board should be replaced.
