Charger displays E04 and does not energize; vehicle does not detect charging current.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the breaker and verify zero voltage at the charger input before opening the unit. The internal relay switches high current and must not be touched when energized.
- 1. Power-cycle test:
- Disconnect power for 2–3 minutes, then restore power and attempt to start a charge.
- Listen for a distinct click from inside the Megear unit when charging should start.
- 2. If no click is heard:
- Open the housing with power disconnected.
- Locate the main power relay/contactor on the relay board.
- Check for burnt smell, discoloration, or cracked casing.
- Ensure the low-voltage control connector from the main control board to the relay coil is firmly seated.
- 3. If relay is clicking but E04 persists:
- The contacts may be welded or not making proper contact.
- With power off, inspect the relay terminals for signs of overheating or melted insulation.
- Replace the relay board if any damage is visible.
- 4. Board-level replacement:
- Megear chargers typically use a relay board or integrated main control board.
- Desoldering and replacing individual relays is not recommended for non-professionals; replace the entire board assembly.
If you are not experienced with high-voltage electronics, have a professional EVSE technician replace the relay or main control board. Do not bypass or jumper the relay under any circumstances.
