Possible Causes
Marginal pilot signal amplitude, slightly bent J1772 pins, dirty vehicle inlet contacts, EV firmware incompatibility with certain pilot timings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety warning: Do not attempt to bend pins with metal tools; this can cause arcing and damage.
- Reseat connector: Unplug and firmly reinsert the J1772 connector until it clicks. Hold it steady for a few seconds while the EV attempts handshake.
- Clean contacts: Use a dry, soft brush or compressed air to remove dust from the J1772 plug and the vehicle inlet. Do not spray liquids.
- Try another EVSE or EV: Test your MUSTART charger with another vehicle, and test your vehicle on another EVSE if possible. This helps isolate whether the issue is with the charger or the car.
- Firmware updates: Check with your EV manufacturer for any charging system firmware updates that improve compatibility with third‑party EVSEs.
