Possible Causes
Damaged proximity switch in J1772 handle, broken proximity wire in cable, loose connection where cable enters charger, failed proximity detection circuit on main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety warning: Always stop charging via the vehicle or charger controls before unplugging to avoid arcing.
- Check connector seating: Ensure the J1772 plug is fully inserted into the vehicle inlet until it clicks. A partially inserted connector can trigger E8.
- Inspect handle: Examine the MUSTART J1772 handle for cracks, loose trigger, or signs of impact damage. If the trigger feels loose or does not spring back, the proximity switch may be damaged.
- Cable flex test: While the charger is idle (not charging), gently flex the cable near the handle and near the charger housing. If E8 appears or disappears with movement, the internal proximity wire may be broken.
- Service or replacement: A failed proximity switch or broken wire typically requires replacement of the entire J1772 charging cable assembly.
